Community Service Learning Projects are a big part of the learning in CIVL 202.
Community Service Learning (CSL) can be defined as a pedagogy consisting of experiential learning within the context of service-work. The service-work is controlled by, and performed for, a community organization. Performing the work enables students to achieve learning objectives related to their academic study. Key to CSL is structured reflection during which students take time to connect their service-work experiences within the community to both professional engineering practice and course learning objectives.
In CIVL 202, CSL project teams are expected to apply the project management skills developed in CIVL 201 to prepare and plan a small project for a community organization. Then each team should spend about 3 days to implement the project plan. Students work on a small project for an advocacy group, service organization, or government agency, and, in so doing, gain experience pertinent to the social, ecological, and/or economic context and culture of the sector in which a student may work as a civil engineer.
