Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Learning Exchange asked CIVL 202 students to produce a conceptual design for their converted carport area in Sketch-Up and to run Sketch-Up workshops for Learning Exchange partrons.

Key Activity: Small Group Discussions

Listening to others and exploring topics like the pros and cons of developing Canada’s oil sands, how technology impacts poverty in developing countries, transit taxes in Vancouver, and more, help students learn about civil engineering context.

Key Topic: Systems Thinking

Key Topic: Climate Change

The systems assignment, a plenary panel discussion, small group discussions, and the media critique assignment give students the opportunity to explore the impacts and mitigation strategies associated with this complex issue.
