Community Service Learning Projects

Community Service Learning (CSL) Projects (also known as Community-Based Experiential Learning (CBEL) Projects)

Community Service Learning (CSL) project teams are expected to apply the project management skills developed in CIVL 201, and learn project-specific skills, to prepare and plan a small project in January and February (i.e. approximately 24 hours per team).  Then, in March, each team should spend 20 to 24 hours (i.e. approximately 3 days) to implement the project plan that you have developed.  The project culminates in a poster session on March 25 from 11am to 1pm in the Civil Engineering Design Studio.

Each CSL project falls into one of four engineering context categories:

Transportation Engineering Context                Water Engineering Context

Emergency Planning Context                           Humanitarian Engineering or Green Engineering Context

You will work on a small project for an advocacy group, service organization, or government agency.  The idea is that you will gain experience pertinent to the social, ecological, and/or economic context and culture of the sector in which you may work as a civil engineer.  Your project may involve data collection, research, planning and testing your ideas, or it may include a small build.
