Information for Our Community Partners

Welcome!

As a co-educator in service learning experiences, community partners play a crucial role in helping civil engineering students understand the influence of context on project goals, constraints, criteria for success, and project outcomes.  The material provided here is intended to help community partners achieve their project goals while co-educating the engineering students.

Background Information about Community Service Learning

  • The 2010 McConnell Foundation Report on Community Service Learning:  Getting Wisdom:  This report, by Silver Donald Cameron, introduces community service learning and reports on CSL activities across Canada.  (CIVL 202 students Sam LaRoche and Tanner Watteyne are featured on page 19.)
  • This is a 2-pager that describes CSL at UBC.
  • Here is a 1 hour video of Dialogue with John McKnight focused on how the university works with communities to achieve change.  Here is another 10 minute video of McKnight speaking about Asset Based Community Development.
